A group of protesters has broken into the vacated Libyan Embassy in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, tearing down images of Libya's embattled ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

Stockholm police spokesman Lennart Loefgren said between 5-10 people on Thursday broke into the embassy building, which has been unoccupied since February.

They were waving the flag of the monarchy that ruled Libya before the 1969 coup, AFP reported.

All Libya's Embassy staff have already walked out in protest to Gaddafi's regime.

A group of protestors also raised the same flag at the embassy in February in a show of support for the revolutionaries fighting Gaddafi loyalists.

Sweden does not have any diplomatic ties with Gaddafi's government.

Libya's last two representatives in Sweden were expelled in May due to "inappropriate activities."
