Ramadan – Health Benefits & Diabetes, by Shahid Athar, M.D.

submission.org

In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Most Muslims do not fast because of medical benefits but because it has been ordained to them in the Quran. The medical benefits of fasting are as a result of fasting. Fasting in general has been used in medicine for medical reasons including weight management, for rest of the digestive tract and for lowering lipids. There are many adverse effects of total fasting as well as so-called crash diets. Islamic fasting is different from such diet plans because in Ramadan fasting, there is no malnutrition or inadequate calorie intake. The caloric intake of Muslims during Ramadan is at or slightly below the national requirement guidelines. In addition, the fasting in Ramadan is voluntarily taken and is not a prescribed imposition from the physician.
Ramadan is a month of self-regulation and self-training, with the hope that this training will last beyond the end of Ramadan. If the lessons learned during Ramadan, whether in terms of dietary intake or righteousness, are carried on after Ramadan, it is beneficial for one's entire life. Moreover, the type of food taken during Ramadan does not have any selective criteria of crash diets such as those which are protein only or fruit only type diets. Everything that is permissible is taken in moderate quantities.
The only difference between Ramadan and total fasting is the timing of the food; during Ramadan, we basically miss lunch and take an early breakfast and do not eat until dusk. Abstinence from water during this period is not bad at all and in fact, it causes concentration of all fluids within the body, producing slight dehydration. The body has its own water conservation mechanism; in fact, it has been shown that slight dehydration and water conservation, at least in plant life, improve their longevity.
The physiological effect of fasting includes lower of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure. In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity and essential hypertension. In 1994 the first International Congress on "Health and Ramadan", held in Casablanca, entered 50 research papers from all over the world, from Muslim and non-Muslim researchers who have done extensive studies on the medical ethics of fasting. While improvement in many medical conditions was noted; however, in no way did fasting worsen any patients' health or baseline medical condition. On the other hand, patients who are suffering from severe diseases, whether diabetes or coronary artery disease, kidney stones, etc., are exempt from fasting and should not try to fast.
There are psychological effects of fasting as well. There is a peace and tranquility for those who fast during the month of Ramadan. Personal hostility is at a minimum, and the crime rate decreases. This psychological improvement could be related to better stabilization of blood glucose during fasting as hypoglycemia after eating, aggravates behavior changes.
Recitation of the Quran not only produces a tranquility of heart and mind, but improves the memory. Therefore, I encourage my Muslim patients to fast in the month of Ramadan, but they must do it under medical supervision. Healthy adult Muslims should not fear becoming weak by fasting, but instead it should improve their health and stamina.
DIABETES MELLITUS AND RAMADAN FASTING
Diabetes mellitus affects people of all faiths. Muslims are no exception. Many diabetic Muslims have a desire to fast during the month of Ramadan, although if they cannot for health reasons, they have a valid exemption. The dilemma for physicians and Muslim scholars is whether or not Muslim diabetic patients (1) should be allowed to fast if they decide to; (2) can fast safely; (3) can be helped to fast if they decide to; (4 ) can have their disease monitored at home; and (5) are going to derive any benefit or harm to their health. Fasting during Ramadan by a Muslim diabetic patient is neither his right nor Islamic obligation, but only a privilege to be allowed by his physician, at the patient's request, knowing all the dangers and assuming full responsibility in dietary compliance and glucose monitoring, with good communication between the physician and the patient .
PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE OF DIABETES DURING RAMADAN

Diabetes mellitus itself adversely affects patients' psychological states by changes in glucose metabolism, blood and CSF osmolality, needs for discipline and compliance, fear of long term complications and threat of hypoglycemic attacks and the possibility of dehydration and coma.
On the other hand, fasting during Ramadan has a tranquilizing effect on the mind, producing inner peace and decrease in anger and hostility. Fasting Muslims realize that manifestations of anger may take away the blessings of fasting or even nullify them.
Diabetics know that stress increases the blood glucose by increasing the catecholamine level and any tool to lower the stress ; ie., biofeedback or relaxation improves diabetic control. Thus, Islamic fasting during Ramadan should have a potentially beneficial effect with regard to diabetic control.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR DIABETICS DURING RAMADAN
It should be directed toward (a) diabetic home management; (b) preparing them for Ramadan; (c) recognizing warning symptoms of dehydration, hypoglycemia and other possible complications.
Patients should be taught home glucose monitoring, checking urine for acetone, doing daily weights, calorie-controlled diabetic diet, need for sleep and normal exercise. They should be able to take pulse, temperature, look for skin infection and notice changes in the sensorium ( mental alertness ) . They should be on special alert for any colicky pain, a sign for renal colic, or hyperventilation, a sign of dehydration, and to be able to seek medical help quickly rather than wait for the next day.
CRITERIA ALLOWING DIABETICS TO FAST DURING RAMADAN
  1. All male diabetics over age 20. Please see editor's note.
  2. All female diabetics over age 20 if not pregnant or nursing. Please see editor's note.
  3. Body weight normal or above ideal body weight. Please see editor's note.
  4. Absence of infection, co-existing unstable medical conditions, ie, coronary artery disease, severe hypertension (B/P 200/120), kidney stones, COPD or emphysema. Please see editor's note.

Editor's Notes
  1. The age limit of 20 has no Quranic basis. The actual physical development and tolerance which can precede the physiological age is the criteria here, not the age. If a male diabetic has the physical built and ability of fasting, he should be instructed to fast if he can do it without difficulty or compromising his heatlh as explained in the rest of the article. Back
  2. Again the age limit of 20 has no Quranic basis. See note (1). Also the ban on fasting of pregnant females or nursing mothers is not Quranic or called for. Pregnant and or nursing mothers have to assess their own tolearance and ability of fasting. Those who are healthy enough, having mild Dibetes should be able to fast. Back
  3. Again. These are general suggestions, not Quranic rules. We should not use the scale to decide when to fast or not. A healthy slightly under weight person has no excuse not to fast, if he/she can. He/she can check with his/her physician if he/she is questioning his/her ability to fast. Back
  4. Again. these are generalization that is not necessarily correct. Some COPD or emphysema patients, mild infections, mild coronary artery disease....etc. may be able to fast withut diffclulty or compromising their well being. If in any doubt ask your good submitter (Muslim) doctor. Back

Indian mob bashes Kenyan student, thinking she is Nigerian

A 24-year-old Kenyan woman  was dragged out of a taxi on Wednesday and bashed by the mob,  who mistook her for a  Nigerian.

Coming just two days after a mob thrashed six Nigerians and a Congolese inside Greater Noida’s Ansal Plaza in Uttar Pradesh  on Monday evening, the fresh attack has left most Africans in the area too afraid to step out of their houses, according to Times of India.

Maria Burendi, the Kenyan, said  she left her home in Alistonia society at 6.15am to collect an African wig and some food from a friend at DPS Society.

On the way, she said the cab was stopped at 6.30am near the Omicorn roundabout by 10-12 men who then beat her up.

“They stopped the car and asked me to get out,” Maria told TOI over the phone.
“When the cabbie and I stepped out, they started slapping me saying that Nigerians are bad. When I said that I was a Kenyan, one of the guys asked them to stop and they relented,” she said.
“I was not expecting this. I wanted to buy some food items but could not. Later I thought I could collect my African hair wig from my friend’s place in Greater Noida. It was then that the attack took place,” she said.

However, police later in the evening said her version was doubtful. They said they nabbed the cab driver and when he was questioned, he denied any such incident happened.

Greater Noida is a town just about 30 kms from the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Feminist: “I was wrong about Hijab”

World Hijab Day

Kendra (Texas, USA)
As an outspoken feminist, I really had strong opinions about wearing a hijab. I felt like it was oppressive. I felt like women lost their identity when wearing a hijab. I was clearly wrong. I truly was ill educated in this matter until a very special person explained the beauty behind the hijab recently.
I learned that wearing a hijab does give you an identity. It gives you a voice. It demands that people respect you for your mind and not your body. I feel free and strong today as I wear this. As women, we choose to wear the hijab and I am so inspired by all of you ladies. Sending tons of love and light to each one of you.

Iran criticizes Saudi statement in Malaysian visit

MEHR NEWS AGENCY

News ID: 3921722 -
TEHRAN, Mar. 02 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson has strongly criticized article 15 of the statement released at the end of Saudi king’s trip to Malaysia.

Spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bahram Ghasemi has rejected the claims made by the statement dubbing it another step in improper and targeted attempts by Saudis which are carried out in huge expenses; “cultural presence, influence of a country comes from its history, culture, civilization and roots in natural causes and is popular and cultural and not something achieved through military coercion or economic or political pressure,” he said.
“Principled policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran as an influential and pacific country is based on mutual respect and avoidance of intervention into domestic issues of other countries and following good neighborliness and cooperation with all neighbors and countries in region and world in order to improve stability, security and peace and indefatigable fight against terrorism,” Ghasemi asserted.
The spokesman slammed what Malaysian government has done as a piece in puzzle of Zionist circles’ agenda destroying unity in Islamic world and deemed it counterproductive to bilateral relations of the two countries.
While hailing recent OIC summit in Kuala Lumpur as a positive step addressing brutal massacre of Muslims in Myanmar, as an important challenge in Muslim world, Ghasemi criticized the statement a deviation from that correct track of policy and a dangerous contribution to Takfiri terrorist plots through financial cooperation with certain countries.
He advised all Islamic countries to be more vigilant toward regional and global situations and avoid measures which would harm friendly relations; “Malaysian government is expected to review, as wisely as before, the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic and avoid suspicious areas and deteriorating issues by deep and long-term considerations.”
Ghasemi also expressed hope that position and capacity of Malaysia could be applied for improvement of unity among Islamic nations.

40 People Watched This Girl Get Sexually Assaulted on Facebook Live. None of Them Alerted Police.

Police in Chicago are working to identify those who sexually assaulted a 15-year-old Chicago girl in an attack that was streamed on Facebook Live.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, said Wednesday that no arrests had been made, but he tweeted Tuesday that detectives were questioning several people. The girl, who went missing Sunday and who was sexually assaulted by five or six men or boys in the video, was reunited with her family on Tuesday morning, he said.
The video marks the second time in recent months that the Chicago Police Department has investigated an apparent attack that was streamed live on Facebook.
In January, four people were arrested after a cellphone footage showed them allegedly taunting and beating a mentally disabled man.
Police only learned of the latest alleged attack when the girl's mother approached the head of the police department, Superintendent Eddie Johnson, Monday afternoon as he was leaving a police stationon the city's West Side, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Tuesday. She told him her daughter had been missing since Sunday and showed him screen grab photos of the alleged assault.
He said Johnson immediately ordered detectives to investigate and the department asked Facebook to take down the video, which it did.
Guglielmi said Tuesday that detectives found the girl and reunited her with her family. He said she told detectives that she knows at least one of her alleged attackers, but it remained unclear how well they knew each other.
He said Johnson was "visibly upset" after he watched the video, both by its content and the fact that there were "40 or so live viewers and no one thought to call authorities."
Investigators know the number of viewers because the count was posted with the video. To find out who they were, though, investigators would have to subpoena Facebook and would need to "prove a nexus to criminal activity" to obtain such a subpoena, Guglielmi said by email.
A spokeswoman for Facebook, Andrea Saul, said she had no specific comment on the Chicago incident but that the company takes its "responsibility to keep people safe on Facebook very seriously."
"Crimes like this are hideous and we do not allow that kind of content on Facebook," she said.
Jeffrey Urdangen, a professor at Northwestern University's law school and the director of the school's Center for Criminal Defense, said it isn't illegal to watch such a video or to not report it to the police. He also said child pornography charges wouldn't apply unless viewers were downloading the video.

As it happened: Paris Orly airport attacker was 'radicalised', say French authorities

FRANCE 24

© AFP
Latest update : 2017-03-18

An investigation will begin into the shooting of a man who attacked security forces at Paris Orly airport on Saturday, to determine whether he “had a terrorist plot behind him” said French President François Hollande.

  • The Paris Prosecutor's office said that the suspect, a 39-year-old Frenchman, had been known to police after he was detected of “having been radicalised” in 2015. He was also known by authorities for robbery and drug offenses.
  • The man's father and brother were detained by police for questioning Saturday afternoon and a search was also under way of the suspect’s home in the multi-ethnic Seine-Saint-Denis area.
  • According to French authorities, the suspect was pulled over Saturday at 6.50am by a police patrol in northern Paris because he was driving too fast. As the man was showing the traffic patrol his ID papers, he allegedly pulled out a gun and fired pellets at the three officers, injuring one of them. Police fired back as the man fled in his car. He later abandoned that vehicle at Vitry, south of Paris, and stole another. That car was later found at Orly airport.
  • At the airport the man attacked a female soldier, trying to grab her gun. He was then shot and killed by the soldier's two colleagues.
  • A national police official said that about 3,000 people had been evacuated from Orly after the attack.
  • President Hollande said that the attack shows that France's policy of having military patrols guarding public sites "is essential", and that the nation "must remain extremely vigilant".

Study: We think black men are bigger than white men (even when they're not)

CNN

Story highlights

  • People saw black men as more threatening, deserving of force
  • Black men with 'blacker' features were seen as bigger
(CNN)When we look at black men, what is and what we see are often different things. Namely, we may see black men as bigger, stronger, and scarier than white men, even if they are the same size.
In a new body of research published by the American Psychological Association, 950 online participants from the US were asked to rate black and white men based on their weight, height, strength and build.
"We found that these estimates were consistently biased. Participants judged the black men to be larger, stronger and more muscular than the white men, even though they were actually the same size," said the study's lead author, John Paul Wilson, of Montclair State University.
The findings got even more ominous from there. Not only did participants distort the size of the men, they also identified the black men as, essentially, more of a threat deserving of force.
"Participants also believed that the black men were more capable of causing harm in a hypothetical altercation and, troublingly, that police would be more justified in using force to subdue them, even if the men were unarmed," Wilson said.

Skin tone and facial variations made a difference

There were more fascinating and concerning patterns in the study's findings:
  • Both white and black participants overestimated the size and strength of black men, but black participants did not label them as more dangerous or likely to deserve police force during an altercation
  • Black men with darker skin and more pronounced "black" facial features (wide nose, large lips, etc) were subject to more distortion. "We found that men with darker skin and more stereotypically black facial features tended to be most likely to elicit biased size perceptions, even though they were actually no larger than men with lighter skin and less stereotypical facial features," Wilson said .

Results have unnerving implications

It's not hard to see where these results could be applied -- the size and perceived strength of black victims of violence has figured into many prominent cases, including the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown and the 2014 shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was characterized as "menacing."
To that last point, this study's findings also parallel a similar study published in the APA in 2014 that found people view black boys as older and less innocent than white boys.
The authors of this study say their findings could be used to further explore the role of stereotypes in social behavior and the application of police force.
