Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been allegedly placed under house arrest after heavily-armed security officers surrounded his compound and prevented him from going to work.
The opposition leader’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) deputy Foreign Secretary Anne Mugisha told the Press in Kampala that Dr Besigye was unable to leave his house in the city’s suburbs.
According to Ms Mugisha, the FDC leader Besigye tried to explain to Uganda People’s Defence Force soldiers that he was going to the city to buy essential household items but they refused to let him go.
"We consider him under house arrest because we do not understand the circumstances under which soldiers were sent to cordon off his house," she said. Police moved in to avert protests following the news, after people started gathering on the streets.
Blocked by police
Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba denied that Besigye was under any official house arrest but when asked whether the opposition leader is free to leave his house she said such an action would depend on "the circumstances."
Yesterday, a vehicle carrying Besigye’s wife Winnie to Entebbe International Airport was blocked by police officers before being towed to the police station. Ms Winnie who works with the UN in New York was on her way to report back to duty when the incident occurred. Ms Nabakooba said the occupants of the vehicle refused to obey police orders.
