Scientists the Maine Medical Center in Portland have found that people who have had a kidney stone might be at a higher risk of developing gallstones.

Studies have already linked problems such as obesity, diabetes and unhealthy diet to higher risks of gallstones and kidney stones.

The new study analyzed three different long-term studies including 240,000 nurses and doctors who completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire, and reported new medical conditions every two years, Reuters reported.

About 5,100 new kidney stones and 18,500 new cases of gallstones were diagnosed among participants during the study.

Results showed that people with a history of gallstones were between 26 and 32 percent more likely to get a kidney stone.

Those who had experienced having kidney stones were also between 17 and 51 percent more likely to report a new gallstone, researchers wrote in the Journal of Urology.

Senior author Eric Taylor said a shift in the type of intestine bacteria might predispose people to both kidney stones and gallstones.
