Mangalore, June 24: The crescent Eid moon of 29h
Ramadan was spotted in Kerala and Mangalore on Saturday. Both the
coastal region began Ramadan a day before the rest of India. Eid-al-Fitr
would be celebrated in the state of Kerala, along with Mangalore, which
lies in neighbouring Karnataka on Sunday. The Eid moon sighting would
be conducted in other parts of India tomorrow.
Following the confirmation of moon in Kerala and Mangalore, markets were lit up across the region for late night shopping for Eid. Kerala, whose one-third population is constituted by practitioners of Islam, the festival is celebrated with great cheers across the state.
Kerala becomes the first nation in India to celebrate the festival of Eid. The rest of the nation is expected to celebrate the festival on Monday. However, if moon is not sighted, Eid-al-Fitr would be delayed to Tuesday.
Among other parts of the world, Malaysia confirmed the celebration of Eid on Sunday, after the crescent moon was spotted. However, no such confirmation was issued by neighbouring regions in South-east Asia.
The moon sighting was also expected in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations today. The updates were not available by the time this report was first published.

Eid Mubarak: First day of Shawwal will be on Sunday, June 25
The moon-sighting committee in UAE has
announced that today (Saturday, June 24) will be the last day of

Shawwal and the first day of Eid Al Fitr.
The UAE moon-sighting committee has also gathered in Abu Dhabi to sight the crescent in the country. An official announcement on the sighting of the crescent is expected shortly.
The announcement came shortly after Saudi Arabia announced the sighting of the Shawwal moon in the Kingdom.
Earlier, Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi, UAE

committee for the holy month of Ramadan to confirm the start of the
month of Shawwal, which will mark the end of Ramadan and start of Eid Al

the crescent moon on Saturday, 29th Ramadan after Maghrib prayer, at the
Judicial Department in Abu Dhabi.

UN: Record 65 million people displaced worldwide
DW
News
The UNHCR's annual count has highlighted the crisis in
South Sudan as the main driver for the new high. However, the UN refugee
agency reported that the number of newly displaced people is going
down.
Conflict and persecution drove up the number of globally displaced
persons to a record 65.5 million last year, the UN refugee agency
UNHCR reported on Monday.
The figures, which are released annually ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20, showed that more than 10 million of the world's displaced people were uprooted from their homes in the past year alone. Some 3.5 million displaced people crossed international borders for the first time to become refugees. "This equates to one person becoming displaced every three seconds - less than the time it takes to read this sentence," the UNHCR said in a statement.

This is "the highest figure since we started recording them," UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi told reporters, pointing out that it was larger than the population of Britain.
Syria and Afghanistan remain the biggest sources of refugees,
with 5.5 million and 2.5 million nationals from the two countries
displaced respectively. The crises in the Middle East have garnered the
most global attention, because the masses of people who have fled the
region in past years have tried to seek refuge in Europe.
Flow of refugees slowing
Despite the global number of displaced persons reaching a record high, the UNHCR's count showed that the flow of refugees last year slowed for the first time in years.
In 2016, just over 10 million people fled abroad or became internally displaced within their country, compared to 12.4 million people the year before.

Meanwhile, the total number of globally displaced also rose by some 300,000 people in 2016 from the year before, a smaller increase than in the previous years.
However, Grandi warned against viewing the trend as positive. "By any measure, this is an unacceptable number, and it speaks louder than ever to the need for solidarity and common purpose in preventing and resolving crises," he said. "Although these figures represent small shifts compared to the previous year ... the relatively stable figures mask a very unstable situation."
South Sudan: world's fastest growing displacement crisis
Famine and civil war in South Sudan saw the country become the source the world's fastest-growing displacement crisis last year. The number of South Sudanese who fled across the border rose by 64 percent in 2016, from 1.4 million to 1.9 million.

"No refugee crisis today worries me more than South Sudan," the UNHCR's Africa chief, Valentin Tapsoba, said, adding that around two-thirds of the refugees were children.
Nearly all South Sudanese refugees have sought asylum and protection in the neighboring countries of Uganda, Ethiopia and Sudan.
Another 2 million people are reportedly displaced internally.

Muslim girl killed after leaving mosque in Virginia
ALJAZEERA
News United States
Man arrested and charged for murder of 17-year-old Nabra, who was last seen near mosque in Sterling near Washington, DC.
The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling on Monday identified the missing girl as Nabra. Her last name is currently being withheld.
Local media reports that Nabra was a student who just finished her second year of high school.
"We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event." ADAMS said in a statement.
It is a time for us to come together to pray and care for our youth."
Nabra was last seen with a group of Muslim teens in the early hours of Sunday after having a meal at a local 24-hour restaurant near the mosque, where she attended prayers for Ramadan, a 30-day long holiday during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, according to reports from ADAMS and local police.
The group was confronted by a motorist. All others in the group managed to flee.
Police arrested and charged Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, with her murder on Sunday evening.
At a press conference on Sunday, TJ Wright, Fairfax county police public information officer, said there "doesn't seem to be any indication" that the murder was a hate crime, but more information would come out as the investigation proceeds.
Surge in hate crimes
Anti-Muslim hate crimes have surged in recent years.According to a report by the Council on American-Islamic Affairs (CAIR), an Islamic civil rights organisation, released in May, there was a "57 percent increase in anti-Muslim bias incidents" from 2015 to 2016.

Muslims in the US fear hate-crime increase after Trump's win

President Donald Trump's campaign rhetoric and moves to institute a "Muslim ban", or halt to immigration from six predominately Muslim nations, has attributed to this rise, critics say.
The community has rallied to support Sterling's Islamic community during its time of need.
Two separate fundraisers - one through GoFundMe, another with Muslim crowdsourcing page LaunchGood - started after news broke of Nabra's murder have raised over $50,000.
"May Nabra rest in peace. Your community cries for you," Giovani Quinones, a donour to her family, commented on the GoFundMe page.
A community-wide reading of the Quran is also being organised to honour Nabra's memory.
ADAMS concluded its statement by thanking their "community, government officials and interfaith partners for their prayers and support during these tough times".
