Kenya: KTA Officials Accused of Human Trafficking
By Ibrahim Oruko, 3 January 2013
A committee of the House is accusing two
officials of the Taekwondo Association of human trafficking and
obtaining money through fraudulent means.
The Departmental Committee on Labour and Social Welfare wants the government to investigate George Mureu (vice chairman) and George Wesonga (Secretary General) of human trafficking through the sport and action taken against them.
The committee also wants the government to constitute a commission of inquiry to investigate human trafficking through sports.
The committee further wants the two barred from participating in any affairs of taekwondo and any other sporting federation in the country for abuse of office.
"The current Kenya Taekwondo Association (KTA) executive committee should be disbanded and a caretaker appointed to run the affairs of the sport for two years to clean up the face of the federation," says the report.
The report, which was tabled in the House by Belgut MP Charles Keter, wants the National Olympics Committee (NOC) to cease recognising the two and Suleiman Sumba as the association's officials and facilitate their removal.
The committee further wants NOCK officials James Chacha (assistant general secretary) and Stephen Soi (assistant treasurer) removed from office for abuse of office. The committee accuses the two of perpetuating impunity in the operations of taekwondo's federation.
"Any other officer in NOC involved in the continued recognition of the suspended taekwondo officials should be investigated and action taken," says the report.
