Federal Way connection
A community action team has formed to address human trafficking — which refers to sex slavery and forced labor — in the Federal Way area. The
team is a partnership between Washington Engage, an anti-human
trafficking group, and Women of Vision, a volunteer ministry of World
Vision.
The team meets monthly and has two primary goals:
education and law enforcement support. The team's next meeting is 7 p.m.
March 27 at the EX3 Ron Sandwith Teen Center in Federal Way. To read

Letter to The Mirror
Brenda Oliver of the Federal Way Community Action Team submitted the following letter earlier this month:
The Federal Way Community Action Team hosted a
standing-room only community awareness event Feb. 29 at Federal Way City
Hall. More than 130 community members attended.
Dr. Debra Boyer spoke on the topic “Demand: Confronting
Norms that Allow Commercial Sexual Exploitation to Exist.” She kept the
room buzzing and called us to action against the norms that allow this
horrific crime of commercial sexual exploitation to exist in our
communities.
Peter Qualliotine, commercial sexual exploitation training
coordinator for YouthCare’s Bridge program in Seattle, explained the
link between pornography and prostitution. His talk was titled
“Pornography and the Reproduction of Prostitution” and challenged the
audience to think about how pornography is quite literally the
reproduction of prostitution.
The third speaker was Valiant Richey, senior deputy
prosecuting attorney for King County. He is active in our court system,
but is also a volunteer in many initiatives. He discussed the law as it
is written today and explained how the new laws will help give him the
tools to do his job more effectively.
Congratulations to the members of Federal Way Community
Action Team as well as the community for making this community awareness
event a success, and bringing more attention to the issue and problem
of human trafficking locally.
Thank you to all of the Women of Vision that were able to attend.
Brenda Oliver, Federal Way Community Action Team
