Jared Cano, 17, arrested for planning to blow up his high school, city of Tampa, Florida
A 17 year old teenager has been arrested in the US city of Tampa, Florida, charged with planning to blow up his former high school from which he was expelled.

Jared Cano is charged with planning to plant a bomb at the Freedom High school in north Tampa and detonate it when students were back for the first day of school on Tuesday.

"We were probably able to thwart a potentially catastrophic event the likes of which the city of Tampa has not seen and hopefully never will," Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said in a news conference.

Cano had amassed shrapnel, plastic tubing, timing and fuse devices to make pipe bombs in his home.

He intended to cause more casualties than the Columbine High School massacre where 13 were killed before the two student attackers killed themselves, police said.

The teenager has been arrested in the past on various charges including burglary and carrying a concealed weapon.

The arrest came after an unnamed individual tipped of the police about the plot.
