An
anchorwoman wearing an Islamic headscarf has appeared on an Egyptian
broadcaster for the first time to deliver a news bulletin.
On Sunday, Fatma Nabil read the 12 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) news bulletin on Egypt’s state-run Channel 1 television network, while wearing a scarf that covered her hair and neck.
“Finally the revolution has reached Egyptian state media”, AFP quoted Nabil as saying.
Since the establishment of Egyptian television in 1960, no female presenters have worn Islamic dress codes as a result of unofficial rules issued by former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, against women presenters covering their hair.
New Information Minister Salah Abdel-Makshoud has emphasized that many women presenters appearing on other international and Arab TV channels cover their hair.
The Egyptians launched a revolution against the pro-Israeli regime in January 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of Mubarak in February 2011.
