Nairobi (SDN)-The European Union has announced an increase in aid to Somalia to help in peacekeeping efforts.
The contribution will go towards paying the salaries of African Union forces, specifically Kenya’s defense force that recently joined the AMISOM mission based in Somalia according to the EU’s ambassador to Kenya Lodwijk Briet who made the announcement in Nairobi today. Each Kenyan soldier is expected to pocket 84,296 shillings per month while in Somalia.
Kenyan troops were added to the AMISOM payroll in February of this year. In stark contrast transitional federal government soldiers who fight alongside AMISOM troops receive a mere fraction of their salary and often go months without being paid. Somali soldiers also bear the brunt of the casualities of war in the region.
