Journalist survives assassination attempt in Kismayo

August 05, 2013

Journalist Abdikhadar Iman Dhaqane survived an assassination attempt early Sunday morning (August 4th) when he was attacked at his home in Kismayo's Farjano neighbourhood, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) announced.
Dhaqane, a correspondent for Horn Cable Television, escaped unharmed.
"We condemn all acts of violence against the journalists and particularly on the house of our colleague, Abdikhadar Iman Dhaqane," said NUSOJ Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim. "It is still unfortunate that attacks against the journalists continue in Kismayo, which will then not only force to self-censorship but might result journalists to evacuate the area, which will result complete media silence."
In a separate incident, immigration officials at Mogadishu airport blocked injured journalist Mascud Abdulahi Adan from traveling to Nairobi for medical treatment, Somalia's Radio Dalsan reported. Adan was scheduled for surgery in Nairobi after doctors in Mogadishu's Madina Hospital could not remove the bullet from his backbone.
The immigration officials said a letter of permission from the Ministry of Information was required for travel and Adan would not be able to leave without it.
Adan, a correspondent for Radio Dalsan and his colleague Mohamed Farah Sahal of Goobjoog Radio were shot in Kismayo on July 17th. Sahal is recovering in Kismayo Hospital.
