The
Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) yesterday handed over a
cheque of US$50,000 to the family of a fallen soldier, Lance Corporal
Septimus Swarray 18179382 who died in active service in the African
Peace Mission in Somalia in July 2013.
Handing over the cheque, the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General SO Williams said the deceased soldier died in active service while in peacekeeping duty.
He said the deceased was a disciplined and committed soldier who died as a hero in combat service; he died for a true cause to bring peace in Somalia.
He said benefits for the deceased soldiers in mission are paid by the African Union Mission in Somalia to the tune of US$50,000 which is the set standard for benefits of fallen soldiers in AU mission.
He also noted that fallen soldiers in the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission usually receive US$70,000
The Chief of Defence Staff called on the families of the deceased soldier to make good use of the money.
Wife of the deceased, Hawa Swarray could not hold back her tears while receiving the cheque in a short statement said ‘Na God in will’
She also said that “I will use the money to build a house and also send the kids to school.”
Many of the commanders who had worked with the deceased soldier spoke highly of him being a disciplined and hardworking soldier since his enlistment into the army in 1991.
The deceased is survived by two children, a boy and a girl.
