NZ veil row drivers warned

Last Updated: 7 hours 40 minutes ago
New Zealand's race relations commissioner has condemned two bus drivers for refusing to accept Saudi Arabian women as passengers unless they removed their veils.

The drivers have been disciplined by their employer and warned that if they prevent women in burqas from boarding their buses again they will be sacked.

The Prime Minister, John Key, says women should not have been prevented from boarding the buses because of their garb.

Gilbert Wong, from New Zealand's Human Rights Commission, says there is a potential case for discrimination.

"There's religious belief - that's one of the grounds in the Act, that you cannot be discriminated against because of your religious beliefs, but also for your cultural expression.

"So, for instance, if someone has to wear something which is an expression of their culture, then you should not be discriminated against."
