Al-shabab Banns Koran Translation of prominent Somali Cleric

Somali’as Al-shabab Insurgents today announced that Koran translations by prominent Somali cleric have been banned by their group. The militia banned Jowar radio from broadcasting the Koran Translation of Sheikh Mohamed Omar Diri.
Sheikh Dirir is a well respected cleric who is prominent in Hargeisa and among the entire Somali community.
Al-shabab’s religious affairs officer in Jowhar, Mr. Osama and other leaders of the militia are reported to have visited the studios of radio Jowhar and ordered the management to change Sheikh Dirir’s Koran translation with another scholar in that religious program.
Mr. Osama and his fellow Shabab leaders threatened the management of the radio that they would be punished if they could not adhere to the ban. However, the militia did not give any explanation as to why it abolished the broadcast of the Koranic lectures by the scholar.
Al-shabab militia continues with its media and journalists harassments in Somalia. The group seized a number of private stations early this year and ordered Mogadishu based stations to stop playing music.
