Over 300 stakeholders in the global ICT industry are
expected to meet in Nairobi for the second Freedom Online Conference
next month to deliberate on improving Internet freedom.
Coming at a time when the Internet is increasingly
becoming the global communication platform, stakeholders will seek to
identify key issues pertaining to the openness and access to Internet
and suggest possible solutions.
Speaking on Friday, Information and Communications
permanent secretary Bitange Ndemo said that the discussions to be held
at the conference, running on September 6th and 7th, will guide future
development of policies governing the use of Internet in the country.
“It will give stakeholders a chance to share
information that undermine Internet freedom especially in Africa and
learn from some of the best practices in the world. The discussions are
geared towards getting more Africans to leverage the economic and social
benefit of the Internet without inhibitions,” he said.
Deliberations will be centred on freedom of
expression through the Internet, its accessibility and how Kenyans can
engage in entrepreneurship through it.
