Chris Herbert,
a British veteran who lost his leg during the Iraq war, posted a
response to those who “expected racism” from him. The response is as
fiery as it is hilarious at some points, as Herbert eviscerates those
without the common sense to treat people as individuals and those who
would use him and his story as a pawn in their political debate:
Herbert acknowledges that a Muslim man is responsible for his missing
leg, but he exhaustively details all the other Muslims who fought
alongside him, helped treat him during his recovery, and are generally a
part of his community.
He also brings up several incidents of discrimination he has
experienced now that he is handicapped, detailing his treatment at the
hands of his white countrymen in England, who mock, exclude, or abuse
him because of his disability.
However, he also acknowledges how silly it would be to categorize
white people as a whole, just as people are trying to do to Muslims:
“Although, a lot of people helped in my recovery! I don’t hate white
brits either! hahaha)”
Herbert continues by explicitly outlining how ridiculous the
comparisons that people make are, saying, “Blaming all Muslims for the
actions of groups like Daeshe and the Taliban, is like blaming all
Christians for the actions of the KKK or Westboro Baptist Church.”
He concludes with a simple, but amazing declaration addressed to
those with nothing better to do than hate on innocent people: “Get a
grip of your lives, hug your family and get back to work.”
The post, which has been shared over 100,000 times, powerfully
illustrates how to act with dignity in the fact of xenophobia and hate.
