A top Somali journalist is among at least a dozen people who were killed in a bomb blasts in the capital Mogadishu, local news agencies report.
Awil Dihar Salad and his driver died in a first blast, a suicide car bomb that detonated at a checkpoint near the presidential palace.
Al-Qaeda affiliated militant group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
At least 17 people were injured in the explosions.
Mr. Salad has been based in Mogadishu for years, and is regarded as one of the Horn of African country’s journalists that worked to revive the media industry there.
Al-Shabaab has waged an Islamist war on Somalia for over a decade, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions others.
Crushing the militant group was one of President Mohamed Abdullahi’s pledges, one which he has continued to reiterate.
