Several prominent Muslim leaders in Libya have called on people to refuse to back down from their main demand which is the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi's regime.

The Network of Free Ulema of Libya issued a statement on Monday condemning the latest crackdown on protesters.

The religious group says the current bloodbath is an indication of Gaddafi's total infidelity to the guidance of God.

The group also notes that the government's brutality renders it undeserving of any popular obedience and support.

The government and its supporters "have demonstrated total arrogant impunity and continued, and even intensified, their bloody crimes against humanity," the statement read.

The religious leaders have stated that the ongoing protests are not only just, but also a divine duty.

The human rights groups say as many as 400 pro-democracy protesters have been killed so far in the Libyan Revolution.

Reports also say that the security forces killed scores of people in the country's second largest-city, Benghazi, in just a few hours.

In the meantime, there have been unconfirmed reports that Gaddafi has fled the country.

The developments come as popular revolutions continue to sweep the US-backed autocratic regimes across the Middle East and North Africa.
