Mogadishu-Medical practitioners operating in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Wednesday

Wednesday, July 20, 2011conducted a free medical camp to assist thousands of drought-stricken families.
The all-day health camp offered residents an opportunity to be examined by general medical practitioners who offered one-on-one consultations and dietary counseling to the drought survivors.
Health workers who volunteered to take part in the ongoing drought mitigation efforts started their operation with Aaal-Yaasir, one of the camps of internally displaced persons in Mogadishu.
The free medical camp is part of Somali health workers’ efforts to create greater awareness about the most common diseases and to play a greater role in community development. 
Led by doctors from various hospitals including Atlantic and team a from the Somali Medical Association, the health workers addressed acute shortages of medication among the drought victims.
Camp leaders Dr. Ubayd Dahir and Dr. Abdi Ibarhim said their aim is to assist those who need medical intervention amongst the inhabitants of the camp.
Dr. Ibrahim said on the very first day of their campaign that they treated about 900 people as they hope to reach more people including women and children who need immediate assistance to cope up with escalating malnutrition rates.
Medical experts said malnutrition is the biggest problem among the internally displaced people of Somalia. Other diseases include diarrhea and skin diseases.
Sheikh Suldaan Mohamed a member of the Al-shabaab committee on drought management has hailed the attempt by Somali practitioners to address one of the problems of their people.
Aala-Yaasir IDP camp host about 6,000 families, majority of whom are drought victims who have fled from different parts of the drought devastated Horn of Africa nation.
