Somali radical Islamists al-Shabaab have warned Burundi to withdraw their troops from Mogadishu or face revenge attacks.
Al-Shabaab leader Sheikh Mukhtar Abdurahman Abu Zubayr aka Ahmed Godane, urged the people in Burundi to force their government to withdraw the peacekeepers from Mogadishu.
The radical Islamist group is vehemently opposed to the Transitional Federal Government in Somalia, .
Uganda and Burundi have provided the peacekeepers serving the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).
Through a voice message circulated Wednesday, the Ameer (leader) told the Burundians that his group was holding a good number of their compatriots as prisoners.
Sustained injuries
He added that some of the Burundians in custody had sustained injuries and told the people in the East Africa state to pull out their forces before al-Shabaab embarked on revenge attacks.
“This message is addressed at the people in Burundi and it seems that their soldiers have been misled to this country without thorough information about the reality here,” said Sheikh Abu Zubayr.
“You (the people in Burundi) have to realise that your mission in Mogadishu has failed as indicated by the dead bodies of your people (soldiers) dragged along the streets,” remarked the al-Shabaab leader.
