The United Nations is calling on Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo to investigate cases of sexual abuse near the countries shared border.
In a statement Wednesday, Margot Wallstrom, the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, urged the two government to take action against perpetrators of sexual assaults while also protecting vulnerable populations.
Wallstrom met with Angolan officials this week in the capital, Luanda. The statement says the government made a number of specific commitments in a joint comminique with the UN including starting a constructive dialogue with Congolese officials.
According to the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs more than 12,000 Congolese civilians were expelled from Angola between September and December of last year.
The UN agency says humanitarian assessments of the region found that many were victims of ill treatment and human rights abuses including sexual violence.
