The Al Shabaab attack in Somalia (Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura)

  1. 1. Japan strongly condemns the Al Shabaab attack against base of African Union Mission at el-Ade in Somalia, on January 15, 2016, which caused heavy casualties including Kenyan soldiers. Japan expresses its deepest condolences for those who have been killed and the families of the victims. Japan also extends its heartfelt sympathy toward the injured.
    2. It is extremely regrettable that the terrorist attack occurred whilst peacebuilding and nation building efforts continue to make progress in Somalia by Federal Government, which is supported by the international community.
    3. Japan will continue to offer its cooperation and provide assistance to Somalia and other relevant partners in order to stabilize the situation in Somalia in collaboration with the international community.
