QUIET campaigns have started for the Kamkunji by-election set for May 23. Six people have so far expressed interest in the seat. The Interim Independent Electoral Commission has sent circulars to political parties asking them to arrange for nomination of candidates.
The IIEC has said nomination papers must be submitted before April 23. Former MP Simon Mbugua who lost the seat through a petition is PNU candidate. Ibrahim Ahmed Jonnie who forced the nullification of Mbugua's election is seeking the sponsorship of the ODM.
Narc Kenya has two candidates after human rights activist Brian Weke declared his interest in the seat. Weke will have to face off with Muthoni Kihara also of Narc Kenya.
The ODM-K has already granted Yusuf Hassan Abdi its ticket for the race. David Waihiga who had indicated he would seek the seat on a Narc Kenya ticket has switched to Agano party.
The PNU National Executive Council meets today to discuss the Kamkunji by-elections after its ally ODM-K declared it will go it alone. Mbugua campaigned in Barma market and MoW yesterday where he expressed confidence of clinching victory.
It emerged yesterday the Somali Community in Eastleigh has called a meeting at the Jamia Mosque to prevail on Jonnie and Yusuf to have one of them quit the race and support the other.
The meeting is scheduled for Sunday. Jonnie belongs to Issaq clan and Yusuf to the Ogaden clan."I am going on with my campaigns. Today I was in Califonia and Ziwani Primary schools. Things look promising. I am confident of winning," Jonnie said. ODM director of elections Joseph Misoi said that ODM elections board will issue certificate to its candidate on April 15.
Weke resigned from Ford Kenya where he was National Secretary for Youth Affairs. He said he will participate in Narc Kenya nominations.
