The United Nations says it is “gravely concerned” about the shooting deaths of four Somali aslyum-seekers by police in Mozambique.
The U.N. refugee agency says the Somalis were killed on April 29 in eastern Cabo Delgado province.
According to a U.N. statement released on Friday, the Mozambique government has confirmed the shootings and has launched an investigation.
UNHCR reported it is working to obtain more details about the circumstances of the killings.
The refugee agency called on Mozambique to “respect the human rights of aslyum-seekers” and hold accountable those responsible for the Somalis' deaths.
The United Nations says Mozambique has become an increasingly popular destination for Somalis attempting to flee violence and poverty in their homeland.
