Somalia: OIC Congratulates Muslims Ummah On Eid Adha

5 November 2011

Ankara — On the occasion of the blessed Eid Al Adha, the Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, addressed the following message to the Muslim Ummah:
"On the auspicious occasion of the blessed Eid Al Adha 1432H, I have the pleasure to express my sincere congratulations to Muslims throughout the world.

Eid Al Adha is an occasion that is full of spiritual and religious meaning, in which Muslims pilgrims meet in the Mount Arafat so that we may remember the necessity of unity and solidarity between all Muslims.
Today Muslims need to close ranks and join efforts in order to ensure dignity and invincibility for themselves, provide support for their brothers in restoring their usurped rights and protect their sanctities, including in particular Al Quds Al Sharif and the Palestinian cause which is the central cause and a top priority for the OIC. In this connection, we strongly support the State of Palestine's bid for full membership of the United Nations and we have made tremendous efforts in support of this endeavour.

On this holy occasion, we should not forget our brothers in the Republic of Somalia, victims of the worst wave of drought that the Horn of Africa has witnessed in modern history. We express thanks and appreciation to all those who have provided support and assistance to the victims of this drought. We still appeal to all Muslims as individuals, governmental and non-governmental institutions, as well as charity and humanitarian organisations to show their continued solidarity with this country and the other countries affected by natural disasters, we should do that in implementation of the teachings of our noble religion which considers solidarity and mutual assistance as a fundamental pillar of Islamic brotherhood. This is also enshrined clearly in the Ten-year Programme of Action.

The latest events that have happened in parts of the Islamic world have shown the importance of the provisions of the Ten-Year Programme of Action relating to commitment to good governance, the rule of law and respect of human rights as fundamental factors for establishing security and consolidating internal stability. I sincerely hope that the changes that have taken place in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya will lead to the promotion of democracy and economic development in these countries. We call upon all Member States that are currently witnessing painful events to accelerate the all-inclusive reform process and to realize their people's hopes and aspirations for establishing the values of freedom and democracy.

Convinced of the importance of disseminating the culture of peace and concord, we at the OIC reiterate our call upon the West to foster commonalities among the Muslim and Christian worlds and to promote mutual interests. Our call for a historic reconciliation between Islamic and the West may form the point of departure for the prevalence of the culture of religious tolerance and understanding.
I take this opportunity to thank the leadership and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their efforts in serving the pilgrims performers and for all the facilities provided for that purpose.
I pray to Almighty Allah for many happy returns of this day and to see the Muslim Ummah regain its privileged position among nations and achieve the progress and prosperity to which it aspires.
