Egypt's former tourism minister Zuhair Garranah was sentenced to five years in prison for squandering public funds, a judicial source said on Tuesday.
A criminal court issued the prison sentence and a fine after finding Garranah guilty of handing out tourism licenses illegally, the source said, according to Reuters.
The former tourism minister was one of many former officials investigated for corruption after the overthrow of president Hosni Mubarak on February 11 in a popular uprising.
Mr. Garranah, who was sentenced along with two businessmen, was charged with wasting public funds worth $51 million, after authorizing the sale of state-owned land for well below the market price, Agence-France Press reported.
Egypt's former Interior Minister, Habib al-Adly, was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in jail. He was the first official from Mr. Mubarak’s administration to stand trial and be convicted on charges of corruption.
On Monday, Egypt’s prosecution has extended the remand for Mr. Mubarak’s two sons, Alaa and Gamal, by another 15 days.
Alaa and Gamal, along with their father, were detained on April 13 on charges of corruption and to determine their involvement in the shootings of protestors during the uprising in January.
They are also being investigated on charges of profiteering from gas exports to Israel at a low price in a secretive deal that is said to have cost the country $714 million.
