Nearly 100 people have been killed in an explosion of a fuel depot in Libya's northern city of Sirte, the recently fallen stronghold of former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

“There was an enormous explosion and a huge fire. More than 100 people were killed and 50 others wounded" in the Monday night explosion, said National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Leith Mohammed, quoted in an AFP report.

He described the scene as “a heart-wrenching spectacle with dozens of charred bodies.”

The explosion in Sirte occurred a few days after Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) officially declared the country's liberation after Gaddafi was captured and killed there.

The embattled despot was killed in his last stronghold and hometown of Sirte on Thursday, after eight months of bloody uprisings that put an end to his 42 years as a notorious dictator.

According to NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil, at least 25,000 people have been killed and 50,000 others injured during the country's revolution.

Gaddafi is the first Arab dictator to lose his life in the wave of popular uprisings that have been sweeping through North Africa and the Middle East.
