Mogadishu, Sept 21: There is a unique sort of reward waiting for the children who have bagged first position in the Quran reciting competition in Mogadishu, Somalia run by an Islamist insurgent-run radio station. The prizes on offer are machine guns, books and bombs. The station has announced that three children will receive these truly unique gifts.

The contest is organised by Andulus radio station that is run by the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militia. Following the successful run of the contest, the first prize winning child received a rifle and $700, while the second prize winner got a rifle and $500. The third prize winner got to take home two bombs as the prize.

All three children received religious books as gifts as well.

Al-Shabab is involved in violence and insurgencies in the already volatile Somalia. The famine and drought in the area have weakened Al Shabab-based terrorism in the area.
