Al-Qaeda’s North African branch claimed responsibility for the attack on a military barracks of the Algerian army that left14 soldiers dead, AFP reported on Wednesday evening.
Al-Qaeda was quoted by the US-based SITE monitoring services as claiming: “The successful invasion that was carried out ...The mujahedeen were able to take full control over the barracks after they killed and injured 30 apostates,” the statement said.
It added that the attacker was killed and that “the mujahedeen made the reception for brother Rabie as a martyr.”

The statement continued with details: “The attack began at 7:07 [local time] with mortar shells and various kinds of machine guns ... the battle intensified and the two sides clashed, then escalated more for nearly two hours,” adding that the attack was “between the city of Yakouren and the city of Azazga.”
According to the daily al-Watan report, a “terrorist” group at Azazga killed around 10 soldiers in the attack late Wednesday, 140 kilometers (90 miles) from the capital of Algiers.
The Azazga guard post is located on the edge of the dense Yakouren forest, where “al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb” is active.
AQIM emerged in early 2007 from an Algerian armed Islamist movement, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat. It now operates in several northwestern African countries, including Mali, Mauritania and Niger. Algeria’s population is just under 35 million.
